With the holidays almost upon us comes a wide variety of activities and fun with plenty of entertainment. One of the best parts of the holidays is all the gorgeous decorations that come with it, from Christmas trees to outdoor lights and more. With lights, however, comes energy consumption, and you’d be surprised at how much energy a fully lit yard or Christmas tree can consume. With this in mind, we’ve put together a helpful blog on ways that can help you be more energy efficient this holiday season.

Switch Over to LED Christmas Lights

Being conscious of your energy consumption this holiday season doesn’t mean that you have to make any sacrifices by way of decor. One easy way to do this is to switch over from using traditional Christmas lights to LED lights. While the initial cost of LED lights may seem a bit expensive (they tend to nearly double the cost of incandescent lights), they use nearly ⅓ less the amount of power as incandescents. Furthermore, LED lights are known to last roughly 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, and are more durable than them as well. With this in mind, the more expensive upfront cost can be easily justified, considering that they will pay for themselves with the amount you’ll save on your energy bill and not having to replace them next year.

Limit The Light Time

As gorgeous as a fully lit Christmas tree or front yard can be, the amount of energy they consume is certainly quite high. With this in mind, putting a limit on the amount of time that you spend with your Christmas tree or outdoor lights plugged in will certainly help you reduce your overall energy consumption costs. There’s no need to have the tree lit when you aren’t at home, nor is it necessary to have your yard lights on during the day. You can either turn the lights on and off manually, or invest in a timer that will do it for you.

Choose Your Lighting

If you have a gorgeously lit Christmas tree that you want to show off as much as possible, one of the best ways to both maximize this while cutting down on your energy costs is to let your Christmas tree serve as the room’s sole source of artificial light. As mentioned earlier, you won’t have your tree lit during the day, so when you do decide to plug in your Christmas tree, turn of all the other lamps and overhead light sources in the room. This will not only cut down on your energy usage, but it will also make your tree look especially gorgeous both indoors and out, as it will be the only source of light shining in the room, drawing all attention to its beautiful decorations.

Those are just a few ways that you can reduce your energy usage this holiday season.
